Aside from Charity’s anguish, contentment filled the hearts of those who made their way home, calling Christmas wishes to one and all, clutching treasures in mittened hands and trundling across the land—theirs by choice or by birth—a land whose harshness seemed mellowed on this night by a happy time and close friends.

Sleighs and cutters squeaked over snowy roads through a night made memorable by a spectacular display of northern lights shifting silently across the great expanse of sky. No one remained unmoved. As always, the exhibition was so awesome that even the unbelievers among them were tempted to equate it with the supernatural: “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.”

Most of the evening’s responsibility had been the teacher’s. Before dropping off into an exhausted sleep, Kate stepped to the window of her bedroom to take one last look at the land she was beginning to love, knowing that she would view it from a different window ever after. The wedding was scheduled for the following afternoon.

A small light winking from the window of Gabriel Goss’s cabin evoked one final thought: “Thank heaven I’ll be free of that lecher’s odious attention! I wonder who he’ll turn his creepy eyes and hands on now!”
